Fall Planning

What’s in season? What to do.

Some notes to myself and anyone else who’s reading along.

September

Keitt mangos are on their way out. See if there are some at the Indian market. Tommys seem to be available all the time but I have no love for them at all.

There may be a few more local peaches or nectarines or blueberries. Scope through the farmer’s market to see what’s in and out.

October

Mutsu apples are available at my favorite orchard in October. They close after Halloween so make a trip before it’s too late. Get some Macintosh seconds for applesauce too.

Pumpkins are inescapable. Avoid getting scolded by the neighborhood kids for not being festive enough and put one up on the step for Halloween. Make a pie or pumpkin ravioli. Roast some pumpkin seeds. Call up the orchard and ask if they will set aside some pumpkin leaves so you can try them in Ugu Soup.

November

Brussel sprouts are at their peak. Trader Joe’s sells them on the stalk, and I prefer them this way because I don’t have to deal with all the brown ends when they have been cut off before shipping. Maybe I could find something to do with the stalk too.

Fresh cranberries are available. Pick some up to make cranberry sauce or sorbet, or for the prettiest way of holding and displaying flowers.

The nearest farmers’ market has moved indoors. Check out the location on Saturday and see what’s interesting.

Order flower bulbs. Plant some outdoors so they’ll come up in the spring. Plant some indoors to test out as Christmas gifts.
